Post-Acute Rehab Shopping - Day 32
Day 32 - Tuesday 10/23/07
Monday (10/22) we visited the 3rd and final post-acute rehab center under consideration for Tym’s care. Post-acute means care given after the care he is currently receiving. Acute care, like at the rehab center, is generally given to get a patient back to self-sustaining mode, but not necessarily independent.
Post-acute care on the other hand has the specific goal of getting patients back into their home, and mostly independent. All brain-injury patients are expected to require some level of oversight. Like I mentioned, we visited 3 centers, all in the Southern California area. We feel now that we have a pretty good idea of what each center can offer. As a family, we have to decide where Tym will have the best benefit.
Family plays a big part in neurological rehabilitation, so having Tym close will both be easier on the family and be more comforting for Tym. It may also motivate him to make a faster recovery. On the flip side, the center with the most experience, and the most thorough program, is not nearly as close. The insurance carriers negotiate care based on days, not on cost, so coverage/price are not an issue. Each center is conducting its evaluation to see if they will recommend Tym for treatment.
I provide these links only if you are interested more in knowing about Post-Acute care. Please do not feel that you have to evaluate or make a decision about this.

Hi Tym and family! Just want you to know that we are behind whatever decision you decide to make on where the rest of the rehab will take place. We just love Tym and want him where God leads you to choose. There are always pros and cons to anything, so we pray that God will give you peace about a decision. What a wonderful family!!
WE LOVE YOU, TYM! WE ARE PRAYING FOR YOU!

Tym: I just heard about your incident. I’m very glad to read about your progress. Hang in there! Thank you to your family for posting this blog. — I’m still presenting the monthly safety meetings which you turned over to me when you left for Vandenberg. I think your story would provide some valuable safety lessons for our folks. Perhaps a case study with lessons learned. When you get well enough why don’t you come on over and we can talk about it? By the way, thank you again for the gear you donated to my son’s Boy Scout Troop. The backpacks and guidebooks have been very valuable and well used.
Get well! See you soon!
Best regards, Joe Soter

Hi Tym!
You are making such amazing progress! I just can’t believe how things change from one day to the next.
Though I hope you get to come to Orange County to get the last of your therapy, more than that I want you to get the best treatment available, wherever that is. Either way, I’ll be around if you need anything. I’m thinking about you and praying for you all the time, and for your family too. You are so blessed to have such a loving one.
Love, Diana
